Repairs will close Drumright museum for two months

Drumright’s Historical Museum soon will be history.
Or, at least, making new history.
Drumright Historical Society officials on Wednesday announced the museum will close for about three months for refurbishing and reorganizing. It is expected to reopen in late February or early March, according to Historical Society Secretary Pam Scott.
The museum will close Monday, Scott said.
“We are really excited about it,” Scott said. “It’s going to add a lot to our museum.

Thorpe Quilt Show winners announced

Donna Nasalroad, Mona Smith and Mary Stalling were category winners in the annual Jim Thorpe Quilt Show in Yale.
Quilts in the show were on display Nov. 5 through Nov. 19 and attracted 164 viewers. A total of 30 quilts were shown along with teddy bears, pillows, baby quilts and doll quilts.
Nasalroad and Crystal Casey placed first and second, respectively, in the Judges Choice category. Smith won the Unique crown and Stalling was the winner in People’s Choice.
Alice Strader placed second in both Unique and People’s Choice.

 

Cushing man faces retrial on child sex charges

Cornell Maurice Mukes will have his days in court — again.
Mukes, a 39-year-old resident of Cushing, has been ordered to face a Jan. 5 retrial on charges he committed lewd acts on a 10-year-old boy.
Payne County Clerk Lisa Lambert confirmed the new trial date and said Mukes also has been scheduled to appear Dec. 19 at a pretrial hearing.

County officials do advance bridge work

STILLWATER — Plans are underway for the construction of two bridges in eastern Payne County. But Payne County District 1 Commissioner Bill Deering is unsure if funding will be available.
“Both of these are federally funded assuming the feds have any money left to build a bridge after all the mess in Washington, D.C.,” Deering, D-Cushing, said in reference to the government’s propping up of a failing financial industry.

Cushing man faces multiple drug charges

A court appearance has been scheduled Tuesday for a Cushing man facing multiple drug charges.
Travis Dale Sharpe, 27, was arraigned this week in Payne County District Court on charges of possessing precursors with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine, possessing the drug Xanax without a prescription, and driving with a suspended license.
He was arrested Sept. 23 on East Sixth Avenue in Stillwater.

 

Yale resident earns position on conservation district board

Yale resident Fred Eberhart has been appointed to the board of directors for the Payne County Conservation District.
Mike Thralls, executive director of the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, announced Eberhart’s appointment.
Eberhart will be part of a five-member panel at the district office in Stillwater.
The Payne County Conservation District is the only local unit of government responsible for the conservation, restoration and development of Oklahoma’s renewable natural resources.

 

Expert on 'Orphan Train' will speak in Drumright

The stories of the “Orphan Train” will come to life next weekend in Drumright.
Charlotte Endorf, author of five books focusing on the Orphan Train, will speak at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at Boomtown Community Theater, 140 E. Broadway St., Drumright.
Endorf, a native Nebraskan, and her daughter, Sarah, are co-authors of “Plains Bound: Fragile Cargo,” “By Train They Came: Volumes 1 & 2,” and “After the Rain, Oh the Beautiful Rainbow!”

County clerk warns residents of property deed scam

Don’t be fooled, Linda Hatfield advises Payne County residents, by an out-of-state company pitching woo.
Hatfield, Payne County Clerk, said an Illinois-based company is offering to provide citizens with certified copies of property deeds. The group is offering its services for $59.50, Hatfield said.
Her office will provide the same services for $2, Hatfield said.

 

Yale teens injured in collision involving ATV

Two Yale teens were injured Sunday when the all-terrain vehicle they were riding was struck by a pickup while attempting to cross a highway, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has reported.
Jeff Lewis, 15, and Jesse Denis, 14, were admitted in stable condition to Cushing Regional Hospital. Lewis suffered head, arm and internal trunk injuries. Denis had leg and internal trunk injuries.

County commissioners send tort claim to insurance company

STILLWATER — Insurers for Payne County appear ready to pay $264 in tort claims against the county.
Payne County Commissioners on Thursday heard the tort claim from William Shaffer regarding an incident that happened about 10 days ago in District 1. Commissioners passed on to their insurance company two $132 claims.
“From the way they were talking, I think they are going to pay him,” District 1 Commissioner Bill Deering, D-Cushing, said. “But I don’t know; I don’t make that decision.”
