Returning senior starters will lead Tigers into 2008-09

The advice for Cushing High School’s boys basketball team is simple: harvest early and fill the barn. Reaping in the dead of winter could prove demanding.
A senior-laden Tiger team tips off its season Tuesday by hosting Blackwell. It will be one of four home games before the semester break for CHS.
Riding the schedule to a quick start could be vital in 2008-09. Cushing closes the regular season with four of its last six games on the road.

McLoud crushes Tigers in district play

McLOUD — Cody Phipps was as advertised. And more.
Phipps, McLoud’s senior running back, led a McLoud ground assault Friday and the 11th-ranked Redskins mauled visiting Cushing 76-28 in high school football.
Phipps ran 17 times for 211 yards and scored three touchdowns. He was the key operative in a McLoud offense that churned out 568 yards and 10 scores. The Redskins bulled their way to a 28-point halftime lead and led 63-21 after three quarters, thrilling a homecoming crowd.

CHS cheer squad advances to state meet

Cushing cheerleaders are headed to the big show.
The Cushing High School squad on Saturday played third in the small coed division of the Class 4A regional competition at Cleveland. By so doing, the Tigers qualified for a berth in the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association state championships.
Cushing will compete Oct. 4 in the state meet at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman.
“We are all really excited,” Erikah Miller, first-year cheer coach at CHS, said. “The quad worked really, really hard and they deserve it.”

CHS sophomore shoots around the world

Abel Spire is shooting his way to the top. And around the world.
He will represent the United States later this month at the Federation Internationale de Tir Aux Armes Sportives de Chasse World Cup in Limmasol, Cyprus. Abel was selected to compete for Team USA by the National Sporting Clay Association.
He is the son of Doug and Becky Spire of Cushing, the grandson of John and Emma Spire and Roy and Nadine Myers, all of Cushing, and a sophomore at Cushing High School. At 15, he is the youngest shooter ever chosen for the FITASC World Cup.

New OSU basketball coach talks of rare "passion" of Cowboy fans

The family atmosphere at Oklahoma State University is rare, the Cowboys’ new men’s basketball head coach said.
Getting that family into a raucous state is the charge for his teams.
“I don’t think I have ever been around a school that has the true support and affection of its alumni and fans as we do at Oklahoma State,” Ford said Thursday. “These people have a true love for their university.
“I’ve been quite a few places and believe me when I tell you it’s not like that everywhere.”

Patterson wins prestigious prep wrestling title

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Oklahoma’s best high school wrestling rivalry moved four hors northeast for the final weekend before Christmas. The change in venue did nothing to change its intensity.
Cushing High School senior 125-pounder Jarrod Patterson beat Perry’s Ladd Rupp and earned an Outstanding Wrestler award Saturday at the Toshiba Midwest Classic Wrestling Tournament.

Cushing cowboy lassos spot in IFR

A Cushing cowboy will attempt to lasso a big payday when the 39th International Finals Rodeo plays out in Oklahoma City.
Jeff Cargill will be among the cowboys in action Jan. 16-18 when IFR 39 invades State Fair Arena and offers $350,000 in prize money.
The International Finals Rodeo is the culminating championship of the IPRA circuit and is considered the ultimate goal for the thousands of participants in nearly 300 qualifying rodeos.
Cargill, with $8,261.59, was seventh in the International Pro Rodeo Association circuit standings for tie-down roping.

 

Tiger linebacker earns All-District 4A-2 accolades

Cushing High School senior Andrew “Rowdy” Johnson was chosen Outstanding Linebacker in District 4A-2.
Johnson was the only Cushing player selected for an all-district honor. Only seniors were eligible for the awards, as chosen by a vote of district coaches.
Johnson was chosen after a season in which he recorded 80 tackles and a quarterback sack. He forced two fumbles and recovered two more.

 

Cushing pins Pirates on junior high mat

Cushing scored seven falls and won 10 of the 13 bouts contested Tuesday en route to a 57-15 thumping of Bristow in junior high wrestling action.
The Tigers raced to a 30-0 lead in the dual and cruised to their 10th victory in 11 duals. Cushing will be idle until a Jan. 13 trip to Glenpool.
Cushing closed out 2008 in grand style. Mason Roberts, Ricky Ahrberg, Gage Stallworth, Ryan Molene, Derek Ridenour, Alex Penny, Clayton Fields and Brock Hubble scored falls for the winners. Cushing led 45-3 after the 142-pound match.

 

Wrestling Tigers maul Bristow

Seven Tigers won by fall Tuesday night and Cushing High School crushed Bristow 51-18 in a wrestling dual. The dual was the last before Christmas for CHS.
Kyle Knight at 112 pounds, Ty Fittje at 125, Jarrod Patterson at 130, Garrett Evans at 135, Josh Myers at 145, 152-pound Karson Knight and Ethan Simpson at 171 all pinned Bristow opponents.
The Tigers also picked up a forfeit victory at 103 pounds and got a tense 3-2 win from Jake Kelly at 160 pounds.
