The funeral service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at the Church of Latter Day Saints on 1500 East 9th Street in Cushing, Oklahoma. Joseph’s family moved frequently so he grew up in many locations during his childhood. As an adult, Joesph was passionate in his life and proud of his accomplishments. Joe was a great example of what the Savior has asked - to love one another, help each other, and be kind and charitable. He put 100% in what he did. He had great integrity and was a man of his word in a world where that type of honor has disappeared. He also had a great sense of humor!
He was successful in his careers, involved in his church, and loved his family. Early in his life, Joseph was married to Gail Rhodes for a short period of time. He served in the United States Navy and retired with honors as an AWC Chief Petty Officer after 22 hours of service. After retirement from the Navy, he studied architecture and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arkansas, completing a five-year program in four years.
He married the late Hazel Sue Doris (Nix) Rose on December 16, 1969, while he was in the United States Navy. They raised their children as he continued his Naval career and completed his education in Arkansas. He retired a second time as an architect. Joe and Sue retired to Ralston, Oklahoma to enjoy their retirement years. After Sue became ill, he served as caregiver for her until she passed away on October 30, 2015, after 45 years of loving marriage.
On June 10, 2016, he married Cecilia Murel (Tibbets) Avers after a short courtship. With this marriage, he gained an extended bonus family of Cecilia’s siblings, children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and nieces and nephews. They spent the short time of their marriage traveling to visit family and eating with family at weekly pizza. Many card games and dominos were played, resulting in shared time of family fun and fellowship.
Joe took pride in woodworking in his shop when he was able. Joe enjoyed researching genealogy and teaching of others. He taught classes for the Cushing community and surrounding areas through the Cushing Chamber of Commerce. He spent many hours sharing his love of genealogy. Joe continued to serve the community even while struggling with managing chronic illness and a recent cancer diagnosis.
He was survived by his wife, Cecilia Murel (Tibbets) Avers Rose of the home, children: Verna Sue Dobbs of Long Beach, California; Beau Dobbs of Ralston, Oklahoma; Kimberly Broadbeck and her husband, Matt of Cincinnati, Ohio; and O’donna Conley of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Steven, Annie, Timothy, Daniel, Sue McKay, Jacob, Amanda, Tabitha, Matt, Drew, Max, Abbie, Allie, Ashley, Wonnyou, Ashley, Parker, and Sawyer; numerous greatgrandchildren. He also is survived by a host of family that he gained with his marriage to Cecilia and several long-time friends.
