Payne County’s oldest homestead gets new life through restoration

YALE — The Rice/Kerby Cabin, the oldest known homestead in Payne County, is getting a careful restoration nearly 150 years after it was first built. Constructed in 1876 by Pawnee Rice and later occupied by the William Sherman Tecumseh Kerby family, the cabin stands as a testament to Oklahoma’s pioneer spirit.
