Orvena Winkelman

Long time resident Orena Mae Winkelman of Cushing, Okla. passed from this life July 28, 2023 at the age of 98. Orvena was born on the Reedy homestead in Agra, Okla. to Clayton and Lillie Reedy on May 14, 1925. The Reedy homestead was the land her father acquired during the Oklahoma Land Run. Her family eventually moved to Cushing where she graduated from Cushing High School. Orvena worked for Western Union during WWII as a telegraph operator and branch manager for the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City. During high school she dated Charles Winkelman and they married 3 days after Charles returned from WWII for 58 years. Orvena and Charles lived in Oklahoma City for a few years and owned a service station. In 1951, they moved back to Cushing, their hometown and owned a Texaco and DX Service Station. Orvena was a stay-at-home mom for a number of years involved in her daughters’ activities: girl scouts, Rainbows and music lessons. She had a very active social life. She loved to sew, water ski, play cards, life time member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and ballroom/ country line dancing. She went to work at the Sears Catalogue store in Cushing and retired in 1989 as store supervisor. Another big interest Orvena had was her heritage. She was very proud of and became a member of the National Society of the Daughters of American Revolution. Captain Conrad Reedy of PA was her direct descendent in addition to having a direct descendent from the Revolution, she also had direct descendants in both the War 1812 and Civil War. She was the youngest of 6 children and was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and their wives, 2 sisters and their husbands and her husband Charles. She is survived by her children Linda Bryce and her husband Richard Bryce and Charlene Milkey. Her grandchildren Michelle Layton and her husband Kennith Layton, Charles Bryce, Jennifer Milkey and her husband Brian Midura. Her great grandchildren Katie Layton, Cordell Layton, William Midura and Siddalee Midura. Her celebration of life will be held at Matherly-Davis Funeral home at 10:30 am, Friday, September 8, 2023.
