Orvil H. Akins went to be with our Lord on January 18, 2025, at Drumright Nursing Home, at the age of 89. He was born July 22, 1935, to Leonard and Versa (Wells) Akins in the rural Yale, Oklahoma area.
He graduated from Stillwater High School in 1953 and joined the Naval Reserve from 1953 to 165. In 1964, he became a fireman in Stillwater, Oklahoma and retired in 1985. He then began working on the farm, raising cattle and horses. Orvil enjoyed his cattle as well as playing the fiddle and singing at nursing homes, senior citizens centers, churches, and many other events. He liked to hunt and fish with his friends and camp out. Orvil enjoyed his grand and greatgrandchildren. He loved teaching them music, farming, and how to have fun. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Yale. Orvil is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Versa Akins; sister Ruth Steward; and his son, Stanley Lynn Akins.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Gibby) Akins of 70 ½ years; son John Akins and wife Jan of Ripley, Oklahoma; daughter Laurea Sue Akins of Grand Prairie, Texas; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Orvil will be missed and remembered by many family members and friends.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Cushing, Oklahoma. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Assembly of God in Yale. Interment will follow in Lawson Cemetery.
