Jim Thorpe’s legacy lives on in the lives of current athletes

The Jim Thorpe Award, named in memory of late Yale resident, Olympic gold medalist, and multi-sport athlete Jim Thorpe, has been awarded to the top defensive back in college football since 1986.In 2017, the award became sponsored by Paycom and was named the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award.

Yale Public Library awarded Sequoyah Book Grant

YALE — Yale Public Library’s book selection has become more vast for patrons thanks to being one of the recipients of the 2024 Sequoyah Book Grant. According Miranda Brown, the Yale Library Director, the 129-books awarded through the grant were estimated to cost over $2,000.
For their contributions to Cushing High School athletics,— most recently the fieldhouse scoreboard project, Joe and Kay Smith and family were recognized between games during last Friday’s homecoming. They are: Children Sharon Kerr and Patricia Niccum; grandchildren Ashley and Josh Thomas, Konnor and Caleb Lanker and Kris Niccum; great-grandchildren Casey Thomes, Haile Lanker and Boone Niccum.

CUSHING - Joe and Kay Smith and all of Cushing’s Smith family was honored between games during Cushing’s homecoming night Friday.According to Athletic Director Bobby Hoover, the Smiths have been generous givers to many projects in the Cushing community.

Cushing School Board approves Learning Academy

CUSHING — The regular monthly meeting of the Cushing Public School Board of Education took place Thursday, Feb. 6 during which all matter were approved, according to Superintendent Melissa Amon, including a renewal, policy adoptions, and several individual employment decisions.

Broadway house burns

CUSHING — A Cushing man perished in a house fire that broke out on the 700 block of Broadway last Tuesday, Feb. 4.According to Cushing Fire Chief Dalton Novotny, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at 6:51 p.m. and were on scene at 6:54 p.m.
